Is Hell a real place?
Years ago, before I was saved, I found myself at the usual weekend party with my friends. Everyone was laughing, drinking alcohol, and having a good time. At one point a good friend said outloud "Oh, I know I'm going to hell!" He began laughing and others joined him with laughter. The problem: most people don't understand that hell is a real place. More importantly, hell isn't a cool place where everyone hangs out, drinks beer, and has a good time. The bible makes it clear many times what hell is like. Here's just a few examples:1. A lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15)
2. A bottomless pit. (Revelation 20:1)
3. A place of everlasting punishment. (Matthew 25:46)
4. A place of sorrows. (Psalm 18:5)
5. A place where people have no rest. (Revelation 14:11)
6. A place where people gnaw their tongues. (Revelation 16:10)
There's one story in the entire bible which gives us a glimpse of hell (from a personal perspective). It's a story about a man that dies and ends up in hell. The first thing he is found asking for is a drop of water in order to relieve him of the pain he is suffering. The man could have asked for a cup of water, but no, he asks for one drop of water. Think about this for a moment: how much is a drop of water? The sobering reality of hell's torment is made clear in the scriptures.
"...send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." Luke 16:24b
Hell is a real place and certainly, it is not a place of fun. Hell is a place of torment and punishment, created for the devil and the angels which rebelled against God. The bible clearly states that man is sinful and all have sinned. The bible also states that there's a punishment for our sin. The question is, where will you spend eternity? The scriptures state that there's only one way to avoid hell, and that's by accepting Jesus Christ as your saviour. Jesus Christ paid your personal debt to God. However, in order to receive salvation, you need to place your faith in Christ. Salvation is a gift from God and all a person needs to do is accept that gift.
Matthew 26:28 "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."
By the shedding of Christ's blood, you and I have the opportunity to be found perfect on the day of judgment. When I stand before God he won't look at my sin, but to the blood of his own son, Jesus Christ. God will see Christ's righteousness, not my sin. Why? Because I've placed my faith in Jesus Christ for salvation and have asked him to save me.
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:13
